Pillar 3a and 3b: understanding the differences

Understand tied and flexible private provision in Switzerland. Compare pillar 3a and 3b by purpose, access and contract conditions.

At a glance

Pillar 3a is a regulated, tied form of private provision. Pillar 3b covers flexible private provision. That distinction alone does not determine which banking, investment or insurance arrangement suits you.

Begin with your goal and time horizon

Describe what the money is intended for and when you might need access to it. Also record existing financial commitments and reserves. This starting point is more useful than looking for a product name.

Understand the framework around pillar 3a

Contribution eligibility, limits and permitted withdrawals follow the applicable rules. Consult the Federal Social Insurance Office and review your own circumstances. A tax advantage alone does not replace an appropriate overall plan.

Flexible provision is not a single product

Flexible private provision can involve very different arrangements. Compare the actual design: risks, costs, possible terms and amendment conditions. An individual contract can still affect practical access to money.

Turn the overview into the right questions

Ask the specialist partner to set out existing and proposed arrangements together. Identify goals already addressed and questions still open. Discuss guarantees, scenarios and costs separately before making a long-term commitment.
