Contents insurance concerns your own movable belongings. Personal liability concerns claims made against you by other people. A combined product can include both, but the two types of cover still need separate consideration.
Two questions, two types of cover
Start with the potential loss: does it concern something you own, or a claim from someone else? That distinction helps you read a quotation. It does not establish that a particular loss is covered. The insured event, exclusions and agreed benefits still matter.
Put quotations side by side
A product called “household insurance” may contain several components. Create a separate line for contents and liability. Record the insured amount, excess, insured people and optional extensions. This makes differences visible before the premium influences your decision.
| Question | Contents | Personal liability |
|---|---|---|
| What is the focus? | Your movable belongings | Claims against insured people |
| What should you compare? | Events, insured amount and belongings | Insured people, liability risks and limits |
| Important for both | Excesses and exclusions | Excesses and exclusions |
Rented homes: describe the damage precisely
For damage in a rented home, note who owns the damaged item and what happened. Ask how the contract treats tenant damage and wear and tear. A written explanation is more useful than a general statement that “the flat is insured”.
Prepare a useful comparison
List the people in your household, significant belongings and questions such as borrowed items or a valuable bicycle. Use the same information for each quotation. Ask for each optional extension to be explained rather than relying on a package name.
