Before moving in together, put both insurance lists side by side. Check who is insured, which belongings are being combined and which contracts continue. Matching product names do not automatically mean identical or unnecessary cover.
Create a shared overview
For each person, record the insurer, policy, insured people, premium, end date and notice period. Separate shared questions from individual contracts. This overview starts the conversation; it is not yet a recommendation to cancel anything.
Make the policy match the household
Ask how the new household needs to be recorded in each contract. Names, address and household composition should be accurate. Where flatmates change regularly, make sure it is clear who is included and when.
Walk through the new home together
List the belongings that will actually move with you. Mark major new purchases and items that will no longer be part of the household. Discuss with the specialist partner whether insured amounts and specific arrangements still fit.
Confirm changes before simplifying
Obtain written confirmation of future cover and its start date. Then review whether previous contracts can be changed or ended. Even where overlap appears likely, notice periods and differences in benefits may matter.
