Compare legal expenses insurance: waiting periods, cover and limits

Review Swiss legal expenses insurance by legal areas, existing disputes, waiting periods and lawyer selection before choosing a policy.

At a glance

Start with the legal areas covered and when protection applies. The absence of a waiting period is not a general promise to cover an existing dispute. The specific policy conditions decide.

Which situations do you want to address?

Write down relevant issues, such as employment, renting, traffic or private contracts. For each one, ask whether and to what extent the proposed product includes it. A broad product name cannot replace this check.

Start date, waiting period and existing disputes

Ask three separate questions: when does the policy start, is there a waiting period for this area, and how are circumstances that began before purchase treated? Keep the answers in writing. Do not expect cover for an ongoing dispute without an explicit review by the insurer.

Understand the benefit limits

Compare the insured limit, any contribution you must make and the geographical scope. Ask what kind of support is provided and how a case must be reported. Also discuss the conditions for selecting a lawyer.

Relate the quotation to your life

Someone without a car has different questions from a person who drives every day for work. Tenants and homeowners may also have different priorities. Describe your circumstances rather than choosing the largest number of modules without a clear purpose.

Good to know

Your questions. Clear answers.

Can a new policy take over my existing dispute?

The insurer must assess this against the specific conditions. Do not assume that a newly purchased policy applies retrospectively.

Do products without waiting periods exist?

Yes. Even then, review the treatment of existing circumstances, exclusions and the scope of benefits.
