Insurance questions in employee onboarding: a clear process for HR

Help new employees navigate Swiss insurance with defined roles, a practical handover and a personal contact. A guide for HR, recruitment and relocation.

At a glance

A useful process separates workplace information from private insurance decisions. HR explains its responsibilities, provides helpful information and offers a direct specialist contact when wanted. Personal policy decisions remain with employees.

Offer a clear first orientation

New starters first need to know what information comes from the employer, which questions they must address themselves and who can help. A short list of contacts and responsibilities is more useful than a large bundle of general brochures.

Explain workplace accident cover clearly

Have the responsible internal team confirm the accident insurance arrangements for the particular employment. Suva states that employees working at least eight hours a week for the same employer are generally also insured for non-occupational accidents. Clarify special situations with the responsible insurer.

Use a direct contact for private questions

Health insurance, home cover, personal liability and a private vehicle belong in a conversation with the individual concerned. Offer a voluntary contact route. An initial introduction does not require an HR team to collect a medical file.

Agree the handover and feedback process

Agree the contact route, preferred language and next steps. Ask the employee whether any feedback to HR is wanted and what it may contain. Confirmation that contact has happened is different from sharing personal insurance details.

Include existing employees too

The same process can help after an internal move, a new home or a change in family circumstances. It creates a service for different stages of life. Prämienheld discusses with partner organisations how this contact route can fit their existing process.
